Alex C. Koen - Art Psychotherapist & Specialist Wellness Counsellor
Background & Experience:
Prior to moving to Singapore, Alex has worked in private, hospital, community, group and school settings since 2014. Alex works within family systems, developing personalised intervention plans while supporting his clients. Alex has experience working with both local and expat clients.
In 2014, Alex opened his own private practice in South Africa. He then chose to diversify by studying for his masters in art psychotherapy in Singapore. Here he continued to nurture his passion passion for vulnerable and marginalised communities, developing skills as an affirming LGBTQIA+ practitioner believing mental health care and compassion are rights for all.
Alex further holds interest within academia, and peer learning through continuous professional development. Alex has presented and featured at local and international conferences held by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) as well as the Digital International Creative Arts Therapies Symposium (DICATS), on contemporary developments within art psychotherapy.
Working with adults
Alex works closely with clients from diverse backgrounds, appreciating the day to day challenges, overwhelm and anxieties of work, relationships and social life. He further has a special interest in working with marginalised groups faced with challenges in their sexuality, identity, gender and orientation. He develops a personalised treatment plan with clients, whilst making use of his training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Art Psychotherapy, Narrative Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Wellness Counselling.
Working with couples
Trained in IMAGO relationship counselling, Alex encourages a safe space for couples to explore and acknowledge conflict, rediscover connection and develop growth through their collective and personal processes. Developing practical take-home applications, tools and strategies aimed towards the couple’s goals.
Personal
Whilst in Singapore, Alex enjoys exploring different cultures, sampling amazing food and travel opportunities. Taking bike rides around Singapore and breathing in the art scene both in gallery, cinema and theatre.
